Where to find the NGC cert number

On the NGC label: the long number formatted like 1234567-001 — a submission number plus the coin's position in that submission. Newer holders also carry a barcode resolving to the same record.

Red flags when verifying an NGC slab

  • Lookup shows a different coin, date or grade than the holder — walk away.
  • Cert photos (available on many modern submissions) don't match the coin in hand.
  • No record for a modern-format number — counterfeit until proven otherwise.
  • Seller won't share the cert number before purchase — sharing it is the entire point.
Buying raw instead? Check whether the coin is even worth grading first — the calculator does the fee math, and the 2026 cost guide shows every tier.

FAQ

Is the NGC lookup free?
Yes — NGC's cert verification is free, and so is this tool.
PCGS coin instead?
Use the PCGS cert verification — different database.
What is NGC Details grading?
A Details grade means the coin has a problem (cleaning, damage) and gets a description instead of a numeric grade — it usually sells well below a straight-graded example.
